THE DESERT NATURALLY
Natural Science Resource Guide

Since 1995, the Natural Science Collaborative Resource Guides have been treasured and coveted booklets that educators relied upon to learn about natural science and environmental resources and programs available to help them meet state and local curriculum criteria.  During recent years, we discovered that the guides have found their way into the hands of the general public and tourists who wanted access to this information as well.  Therefore, we have agreed to reformat and expand the upcoming resource guide to meet the needs of a wider audience.
The purpose of this revised resource guide, now called The Desert Naturally, will be to provide educators and our greater Coachella Valley community with information about our natural Desert as well as support and encourage sustainable Eco/Geo tourism in our area. The expanded content will provide much more information and elicit greater community involvement in support of our Desert’s nature related organizations, sites and activities.

A full color, online version is being updated and will be available soon.

Aside from our usual  Natural Science Collaborative activities, we undertake a variety of special projects. We evaluate the need in our community and the resources we have available to implement projects.

We also discuss ways to engage our community in cultural, natural science and environmental experiences and  look for new and innovative ways to  excite. involve  and educate our community.

THE NSC FIELD TRIP TRANSPORTATION PROJECT
The ongoing budget cuts in education have impacted our schools in many ways.  One of the most hard hit areas is providing transportation  for field trips.

The United States falls far behind other countries in science test scores. The NSC strongly believe that natural science lessons actually  taught in nature result in greater comprehension, more student participation  and provide a solid base for continued learning in the classroom..

The NSC will become actively involved in fundraising to help cover the transportation costs for field trip transportation that relate specifically to natural science.

Please check back for more information as this project grows.

DESERT ROBOTICS

Desert Robotics is a program for students participating in a nationwide educational technology program called Botball.  Botball is a fun, highly engaging program that reinforces STEM (education, science, technology, engineering, and math) concepts while teaching leadership, teamwork, time management, organization, and design skills.

Teams participate in several academic projects, a state regional robotics tournament, and the annual Global Conference on Educational Robotics.

Many projects focus on environmental issues.  The topic for the 2010-2011 school year will be "Saving Birds from Oil Spills".

Linda Reynolds is the director of the award winning Desert Robotics and you may contact her at: teckteacher@yahoo.com
